1. Nuts

When going on a camping trip don’t buy roasted nuts from the store, especially since they are roasted in a factory with lots of oil and additives. Instead, you should buy fresh nuts from a market and roast them yourself; it’s a much better and healthier option.

You can cook up different kinds of nuts, using different spices to season them or have them salty, sweet, etc. Take some raw almonds, peanuts or hazelnuts, add oil and spices like chili, paprika, cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, curry, and just roast them on the fire in a pan (cast iron pan works well) over the fire, and you’ll have healthy and tasty snacks which will give you energy and healthy fats.

2. Beans

Beans are always a good option when it comes to cooking on fire, whether they are the main meal, or you serve them as a side dish with something else.

Just grab a can of Mexican black beans and mix it with come tomatoes, corn, jalapeno, and place them in a pan on the fire. Put everything inside a taco with some meat, and you’ll have yourself a nice, tasty meal.

If you want to make healthy desserts over a fire, the food to go with is fruits. Of course, it is better to eat the fruits raw, but when cooked over a fire they get a stronger aroma and taste, more like delicious sweets than plain fruits.

  • Place some pieces of pineapple on a stick and put them over a fire for few minutes. After a while, they will get caramelized, and you can serve them as a side dish or with some ice cream toppings.
  • Wrap some apples in a tin foil and place them in the hot coal of the fire for few minutes. You will get sweet and yummy apples, that mixed with something creamy will give you and your camping buddies a wonderful and healthy dessert.

6. Steak

The first thing that you think of when cooking on a campfire is usually steak. It is almost as if steak was invented to be grilled on an open fire.

With some easy grilling steps, with some vegetables as a side dishes and a fresh salad, you will get an excellent and filling meal.

First, you have to marinate your meat with some seasoning or rub (you can have this in a bag and put the steak in with it to make sure it’s covered), and then just place it over the campfire on a grill. Avoid flipping the steak too many times, but make sure that you check if it’s ready by poking it or making a cut in it since a steak cooked over the fire is usually cooked very quickly.

7. Chicken

Same as the steak, you can cook a chicken very easily and have a great filling meal that tastes delicious.

There are loads of different ways to cook the chicken, and you’ll be the star of the camping trip if you get it right.

Grill your chicken on the open fire, and after it’s finished slice it into strips. Place the meat in a soft or hard taco, add some vegetables, like tomatoes, onion, lettuce, and some sauce and seasoning, and you will get a delicious dinner.

8. Potatoes

One of the best and easiest options for cooking with a fire is the good old potato. You can make and serve the potato in many different ways, boiled, fried, with or without seasoning, but the best way to make one over an open fire is to bake them in the embers.

Just wrap the potatoes in a tin foil with some oil and spices and place them in the embers until the potato is soft. When they are done, you and your friends will have a beautiful, warm and tasty snack.

They are very easy to cook, delicious, and your kids will have a blast while making their own desserts, look up ‘s’more’ for a special treat.
